Ingredients:
- 2 slices of your favorite bread (such as sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (30 ml)
- 2-3 slices (approximately 2 ounces) of cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded (55-60g)
- Pinch of garlic powder (optional)
- A thin smear of mayonnaise to the outside of the bread slices (optional)
Instructions:
- Spread softened butter evenly on one side only of each slice of bread. Optional: Lightly spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the other side of the bread.
- Place one slice of bread, butter-side down (or mayo side up if you have used it), in the skillet. Arrange the cheese slices evenly on top of the bread. Optional: Sprinkle with a pinch of garlic powder.
- Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up (or mayo side up).
- Place the skillet over medium-low heat. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted and gooey. Gently press down on the sandwich with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
- Remove the grilled cheese from the skillet and cut it in half. Serve hot.
