Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of bread (e.g., sourdough, brioche, white - about 100g / 3.5 oz total)
  • 1-2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (15-30 mL / 0.5-1 fl oz)
  • 2-3 ounces cheese, shredded or thinly sliced (55-85g / 2-3 oz)
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon mayonnaise (2.5 mL / 0.08 fl oz)

Instructions:

  1. Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread with softened butter. For an extra golden crust, spread a very thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the bread slices.
  2. Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in the skillet. Add the cheese, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.
  3. Place the second slice of bread on top, butter-side up.
  4. Cook over medium-low heat, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bottom slice of bread is golden brown and the cheese starts to melt (about 2-3 minutes).
  5. Carefully flip the sandwich. Continue cooking until the second slice of bread is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted and gooey (about 2-3 minutes). Press gently with the spatula.
  6. Remove from the skillet and serve immediately.
