Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  • ¾ cup (1 ½ sticks, 170g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 medium (about 600g) apples, peeled, cored, and diced (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Braeburn)
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ cup (60g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (50g) rolled oats (not instant)
  • ½ cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Line the 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
  2. Combine flour, brown sugar, and salt in a bowl. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Chill for 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Bake the crust for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  5. While the crust is baking, combine diced apples, granulated sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a large bowl. Toss to coat.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Spread the apple filling evenly over the partially baked crust. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crumble topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  9. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before lifting them out using the parchment paper overhang. Cut into bars and serve.
