Ingredients:

  • 12 large pretzel rods (approximately 8-10 inches long)
  • 120g high quality dark chocolate chips (4 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable shortening (optional, for smoother chocolate)
  • 12 whole almonds, blanched (for fingernails)
  • Red food coloring gel (just a tiny dab)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g)
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup (30ml)
  • 2 tablespoons water (30ml)
  • Blue food coloring (gel or liquid)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Edible Glass (Optional): Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Increase heat and cook without stirring until the mixture turns a light amber color. Quickly stir in a drop or two of blue food coloring. Pour onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and let cool completely until hard. Once cool, carefully break into small shards.
  2. Melt the Chocolate: Melt the dark chocolate chips and shortening (if using) in a double boiler or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  3. Bloody Dip: Dip each pretzel rod into the melted chocolate, leaving about 2-3 inches of the bottom exposed (to resemble a bone). Tap off excess chocolate.
  4. Apply the Nail: While the chocolate is still wet, press a blanched almond onto one end of the chocolate-covered pretzel rod to resemble a fingernail.
  5. Add the Glass: While the chocolate is still wet, insert the edible glass shard into the top of the finger (where the tip would be severed). Use a toothpick to mix the red food coloring into the dark chocolate. You may need to apply small droplets for it to appear like the glass shard just severed the finger.
  6. Set the Fingers: Place the dipped pretzel rods on a parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate for about 20-30 minutes, or until the chocolate is set.
