Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (450g) fresh asparagus, preferably medium thickness
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3g) sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) extra virgin olive oil (or butter)
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) fresh lemon juice (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus spears. The asparagus will naturally break where it becomes tender.
  2. Pour water into the saucepan. Place the steamer basket or colander inside the saucepan, ensuring the water level is below the bottom of the basket.
  3. Place the asparagus spears in a single layer in the steamer basket.
  4. Sprinkle the salt evenly over the asparagus.
  5. Cover the saucepan with the lid. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and steam for 5-8 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender-crisp and bright green.
  6. Use a fork to test the asparagus. It should be easily pierced but still have a slight resistance.
  7. Carefully remove the asparagus from the steamer basket using tongs.
  8. Transfer the asparagus to a serving platter. Drizzle with olive oil (or butter) and lemon juice (if using). Season with freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately. Enjoy this easy steamed asparagus recipe.
