Ingredients:
- 1 pound (450g) fresh asparagus, preferably medium thickness
- 1 cup (240ml) water
- 1/2 teaspoon (3g) sea salt
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) extra virgin olive oil (or butter)
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) fresh lemon juice (optional)
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus spears. The asparagus will naturally break where it becomes tender.
- Pour water into the saucepan. Place the steamer basket or colander inside the saucepan, ensuring the water level is below the bottom of the basket.
- Place the asparagus spears in a single layer in the steamer basket.
- Sprinkle the salt evenly over the asparagus.
- Cover the saucepan with the lid. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and steam for 5-8 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender-crisp and bright green.
- Use a fork to test the asparagus. It should be easily pierced but still have a slight resistance.
- Carefully remove the asparagus from the steamer basket using tongs.
- Transfer the asparagus to a serving platter. Drizzle with olive oil (or butter) and lemon juice (if using). Season with freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately. Enjoy this easy steamed asparagus recipe.
