Ingredients:

  • 1 cup basmati rice (185 grams)
  • 1.5 cups water (360 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or olive oil (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Place the basmati rice in a strainer. Rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
  2. Soak the rinsed rice in water for 20-30 minutes. This step hydrates the grains and helps them cook evenly.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine 1.5 cups of water with the soaked (or unsoaked) rice; add salt and butter/oil if using.
  4. Cover the saucepan and bring the water to a rapid boil over high heat.
  5. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low. Keep the lid on and let simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the water is fully absorbed. Do not lift the lid during cooking!
  6. Remove the pan from heat. Let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Then, fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving.
