Ingredients:
- 1 cup granulated sugar (200g)
- 1/4 cup water (60ml)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (60ml)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (30g)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 6 medium-sized tart apples (e.g., Granny Smith)
- Sticks (popsicle or wooden skewers)
- 1/2 cup crushed nuts (e.g., peanuts, almonds)
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (40g)
- 1/4 cup sprinkles (30g)
Instructions:
- Wash and dry the apples, removing any wax coating. Insert sticks into the tops of the apples to create handles.
- In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and water. Cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Increase heat and boil without stirring until the mixture reaches a deep amber color, about 6-8 minutes.
- Remove from heat and carefully whisk in heavy cream, butter, vanilla, and salt. The mixture may bubble.
- Allow the caramel to cool slightly, then dip each apple into the caramel, covering two-thirds of the apple. Let excess caramel drip off, then place on the prepared baking sheet.
- While the caramel is still sticky, roll or sprinkle each apple with chosen toppings.
- Refrigerate apples for 30 minutes to allow caramel to firm up.
