Ingredients:

  • 6 fl oz (180 ml) Hot Water (near-boiling)
  • 5 fl oz (45 ml) Whisky (Scotch, Irish, or Bourbon)
  • 1 Tbsp (21 g) Good Quality Honey
  • 1/2 fl oz (15 ml) Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 4 Whole Cloves (optional)
  • 1 Lemon Wheel or Half-Slice
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Warm the Vessel: Fill your chosen mug or heat-proof glass with hot tap water and let it sit for 30 seconds, then discard the water. This prevents the Hot Toddy from cooling instantly upon assembly.
  2. Heat the Water: Bring the 6 fl oz (180 ml) of water to a strong, rolling boil using a kettle or small saucepan.
  3. Combine the Base Flavours: Add the measured honey (1 Tbsp) and freshly squeezed lemon juice (1/2 fl oz) directly into the warmed mug.
  4. Introduce the Spirit: Pour the whisky (1.5 fl oz) into the mug over the honey and lemon mixture.
  5. Dissolve and Mix: Pour a small splash (about 1 fl oz) of the hot water into the mug first, and stir vigorously until the honey is completely dissolved and the mixture looks uniform.
  6. Top Up: Carefully pour the remaining hot water into the mug, filling it to about 1/2 inch below the rim. Stir gently one last time.
  7. Garnish and Serve: If using cloves, gently stud the edges of the lemon wheel with the four whole cloves. Place the studded lemon wheel on the rim and add the cinnamon stick for aroma. Serve immediately while piping hot.
