Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of sourdough bread (about 280 g)
  • 4 slices of sharp cheddar cheese (approximately 240 g)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (about 30 g)
  • 1 ripe tomato, sliced (optional, about 150 g)
  • 1 ripe avocado, sliced (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves, to taste (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the skillet over medium heat.
  2. Spread one tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet.
  4. Layer two slices of cheese on each slice of bread. Optionally add sliced tomato, avocado, or basil on top of the cheese.
  5. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
  6. Cook for 3-4 minutes, checking occasionally for golden brown color.
  7. Flip the sandwiches carefully using the spatula.
  8. Cook the second side for an additional 3-4 minutes until golden and the cheese is melted.
  9. Remove from skillet and allow to cool slightly before slicing.
