Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (45g)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (30ml)
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (approximately 750g)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (3g)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (1g)
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (5g) (Optional)
- 2 tablespoons dry red wine (30ml) (Optional)
- 2 cups full-fat sour cream (480g)
- 1 cup mayonnaise (240g)
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (2g)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (1g)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until softened and translucent (about 15 minutes).
- Add sugar (if using). Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized (about 30-45 minutes). Reduce heat if onions begin to burn.
- If using, add red wine to the skillet and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom. Cook until wine is absorbed.
- Remove onions from heat and let cool completely.
- In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, chives, parsley, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Gently fold cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture.
- Season with additional salt and pepper as needed.
- Cover the french onion dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld.
