Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (45g)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (30ml)
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (approximately 750g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (3g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (1g)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (5g) (Optional)
  • 2 tablespoons dry red wine (30ml) (Optional)
  • 2 cups full-fat sour cream (480g)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (240g)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (2g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (1g)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until softened and translucent (about 15 minutes).
  2. Add sugar (if using). Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized (about 30-45 minutes). Reduce heat if onions begin to burn.
  3. If using, add red wine to the skillet and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom. Cook until wine is absorbed.
  4. Remove onions from heat and let cool completely.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, chives, parsley, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  6. Gently fold cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture.
  7. Season with additional salt and pepper as needed.
  8. Cover the french onion dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld.
